Residents of Oak Trace in Downers Grove Celebrate Walktoberfest

They logged a total of 609 hours (36,545 minutes) over a period of 28 days.

Residents of Oak Trace senior living community in Downers Grove recently completed the inaugural Walktoberfest fitness challenge. During the month of October, participants were encouraged to walk for 30 minutes each day, tracking the time spent and not the number of steps or mileage. They could fulfill their goal outdoors along the beautiful grounds, indoors on a treadmill or NuStep machine, or wherever they chose. One couple even tracked their time walking during their travels out of the country. Forty-nine residents participated, with 36 reaching the goal of 30 minutes daily for the entire month.

Special events were held during the challenge, including weekly raffles, group walks, a closing celebration, and a grand raffle drawing.

Gina O’Leary, fitness supervisor, uses challenges such as this to encourage fitness participation. “It adds an element of fun, accountability, and motivation. The participants form a mini community of like-minded individuals who encourage each other. It was nice to see people walking with a friend around campus and having everyone come into the gym each Monday morning to get their walk log stamped,” she said.
