How Community Living Encourages a More Active Lifestyle

Staying active as we age can be difficult. The 2021 Senior Report from the United Health Foundation found that 31% of adults ages 65 and older in fair or better health were physically inactive. Only 23.1% of adults ages 65 and older met the federal physical activity guidelines

This is a concern because regular exercise helps keep us healthy as we age.

Regular exercise in adults can reduce the risk of several health outcomes, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, obesity and the development of diabetes. In addition, the CDC has reported that the loss of strength and stamina attributed to aging is in part caused by reduced physical activity.

There is good news, however. The number of active older adults in the U.S. is rising and social support from friends and family has been consistently linked to regular physical activity.

The Value of Health and Wellness in Your Retirement Years

The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) recommends older adults aim for 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity. This type of activity includes walking, dancing and swimming. In addition, the ODHP recommends older adults do balance exercises — think yoga or pilates — and muscle-strengthening activities at least two days a week.

If older adults cannot do 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity a week because of chronic conditions, they should be as physically active as their abilities and conditions allow.

Some of the benefits of daily physical activity, as outlined by the ODHP, include:

  • Lowers your risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer
  • Improves your strength and balance so you can prevent injuries and falls
  • Improves your mood and reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression
  • Improves your ability to think, learn and make decisions

All these benefits help older adults maintain the ability to live independently. That is why we encourage residents at Oak Trace to stay active year-round.

How Community Living Keeps You Active and Engaged

Being part of a retirement community comes with many health benefits. We provide residents with the means to achieve their fitness goals and remain active as they age.

Custom Fitness Plans to Help You Stay Active

Most senior living communities offer some type of fitness program. But a community committed to wellness will develop individualized fitness plans tailored to your abilities and interests. When you have a fitness plan that you enjoy, it is easier to keep motivated and stay active.

Easier to Eat Healthier, Well-Balanced Meals

Eating healthy is a challenge at any age. For many of us, access to fresh ingredients and a lack of cooking inspiration can be major hurdles. The best retirement communities offer nutritious, chef-prepared meals and healthy snacks. Daily dining experiences help add variety to your diet, and less time doing dishes means more time for pursuing your favorite hobbies.

Support From Other Residents Provides Motivation

Community life provides more opportunities for socialization, which brings many health benefits. Additionally, these same bonds you form with other residents can make exercise easier. There is a reason having a workout buddy is popular — they keep you accountable.

On-Site Activities Stimulate the Body & Mind

Many communities will also go above and beyond in the services and amenities they provide. Oak Trace has 40 acres of landscaped grounds for residents to explore. One of the more unique amenities we offer at Oak Trace is our fully equipped woodworking shop. Spaces such as this one allow residents to pursue their favorite hobbies or even pick up new ones.
